Stem cells are a peculiar group of cells whose cell fate is not yet
determined. These are considered totipotent cells for their ability to originate
any kind of cell by a process called cellular differentiation.
Early in
development, cells of the morula are totipotent and, with the evolution of
the embryo, they will differentiate into specialized cells that will result
in the formation of all the different organs. However, there is a small
amount of bone marrow stem cells in an adult individual destined to the
production of other marrow cells and erythrocytes.
